AI Video Falsely Accuses Texas Senate Candidate James Talarico

An AI-generated video posted on X on 20 October 2026 falsely accused James Talarico of abuse. Researchers link it to the Russian operation Storm-1516.

An AI-generated video posted on X on 20 October 2026 showed a man falsely accusing James Talarico, the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Texas, of sexually abusing him as a student. Researchers attribute it to the Russian influence operation Storm-1516.[1][2]

What Happened

The account @Zyon_Lewis_5 posted the videos. In them, a man claims Talarico abused him at Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio in 2012.[3] Talarico taught sixth-grade English there from 2011 to 2013.[1] The account was created in September 2026, with Romania as the signup country, according to X.[1] X separately lists it as U.S.-based but notes the "country or region may not be accurate." X also says a partner indicated a possible proxy, such as a VPN.[2] It had only four posts before the allegation.[2]

One post drew 33,000 views and 200 likes in one day.[1] Darren Linvill of Clemson University wrote on X that it was "immediately shared by 15 marketing bots." Paid influencers amplified it, including "Liberal Tear Creator™" with more than 185,000 followers. Across the posts, the claim drew more than 500,000 views on X.[2]

NewsGuard found that Google's AI Overview, Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot repeated the false claim. The AI Overview cited an ABC News article and a KTAL article, neither of which mentioned the allegation.[1]

NewsGuard noted unnatural eye movements and blinking, and stagnant facial expressions. The teeth were noticeably different from the real Zyon Lewis's. The man had an African accent, but his Facebook account shows no evidence that he ever lived in Africa. An on-screen caption used the British spelling "behaviour".[1] Lead Stories noted unnatural lip and facial movements and artificial-looking blinking. The body and background stay unusually still, and the voice has a synthetic, monotone quality. Searches of Google News and Yahoo News found no established news reports of the allegation.[3]

The real Zyon Lewis spoke to Lead Stories by phone on 21 October 2026. "I've looked at it, and it's not me. The video is very much AI, very bad AI," he said. Of Talarico, his sixth-grade teacher, he said: "Never messed with me. Never was weird any kind of way towards me or any other student that I've ever seen." He suspects pictures and posts were taken from his Facebook account.[3] In a 14 February 2026 Facebook post, he wrote: "I feel so honored and proud to have been taught by him in middle school."[1]

The Gnida Project, an anonymous research group, attributed the videos to Storm-1516 in a 21 October X post. NewsGuard describes the campaign as one "which frequently uses AI deepfakes posted to recently created social media accounts."[1] Linvill said the post "follows the Russian playbook" and "The story is recycled," pointing to a similar 2024 claim about Tim Walz.[2]

The Talarico campaign did not immediately respond to NewsGuard. Google and Microsoft did not respond.[1] The campaign and the San Antonio Independent School District did not immediately respond to Straight Arrow News.[2]

Why It Matters

The account used a real person's name and profile picture to make a fabricated accusation look personal and credible. AI assistants repeated the claim, citing articles that did not contain it.

What to Do

  • Check the account. A new account with few posts making a serious claim is a warning sign.
  • Look for the person named. Here, the real Zyon Lewis said the video was not him.
  • Search established news outlets. A serious allegation with no coverage deserves caution.
  • Do not treat chatbot summaries as confirmation. Open the cited articles and read them.
  • Watch faces and voices closely: blinking, lip movement, stiff expressions and a flat voice.
