Witness vs AI or Not: Which AI Detector Is Better?

Comparing Witness and AI or Not for AI detection: features, pricing, accuracy, and media type coverage to help you pick the right tool.

Witness vs AI or Not: Which AI Detector Is Better?

Two tools, similar promise: upload a file and find out if it was made by AI. AI or Not and Witness both detect AI-generated content, but they differ in approach, depth of analysis, and where you can use them. This comparison covers what each tool actually does, where each falls short, and which one fits the problem you are trying to solve.

What Is AI or Not?

AI or Not is a detection platform built by Optic. It started as an image-only checker in 2023 and has since expanded to cover text, images, music, and video. It pulls roughly 40,000 monthly organic visitors [1] and targets a broad audience: artists checking for unauthorized AI reproductions, content moderators, and consumers who want a quick verdict on a suspicious file.

AI or Not offers both a web interface and an API. Its detection claims 98.9% accuracy across supported formats, and it processes audio at 20x real-time speed [2].

What Is Witness?

Witness is a deepfake detection platform covering images, video, and voice. It was built around the specific threats people face online: scam calls using cloned voices, face-swap video calls, and AI-generated profile photos. Beyond classifier-based detection, Witness layers in C2PA provenance checks, GradCAM heatmaps, generator attribution, and dedicated face-swap detection.

Witness offers 5 free scans without an account, then 20 scans per month with a free account. The Chrome extension lets you scan images directly on any website without leaving the page.

Where They Differ

Face-swap detection

This is the clearest gap. AI or Not classifies whether content was generated by AI. It does not have a dedicated model for face swaps, which are a different problem: a real video where one person's face has been replaced with another's. Face swaps are the primary tool in video call scams, sextortion, and identity fraud.

Witness runs a separate face-swap detector alongside its general AI classifier. When it finds a swap, it reports which face regions triggered detection and the confidence level. This matters because face-swap deepfakes are the fastest-growing fraud vector, and a general "AI or not" classifier can miss them since the underlying video is real footage with only the face replaced.

Visual explainability

AI or Not returns a verdict: AI-generated or not. Witness returns a verdict plus the evidence behind it: a GradCAM heatmap highlighting the image regions the model flagged, per-signal confidence scores, and generator attribution when confidence is high. The difference matters when you need to understand why something was flagged, not just that it was.

In-browser scanning

Witness has a Chrome extension that lets you right-click any image on any website and scan it without downloading or uploading anything. This works on sites that block right-click saving, including social media platforms. AI or Not has no browser extension. You must save the file and upload it manually.

Text detection

AI or Not detects AI-generated text. Witness does not. If your primary concern is checking whether an article, essay, or message was written by a language model, AI or Not covers that and Witness does not.

Music detection

AI or Not detects AI-generated music. Witness does not cover music. If you work in music licensing or rights management, AI or Not has a specific edge here.

Pricing

Both tools offer free tiers, but they work differently.

AI or Not requires an account for any use and gives 5 free checks per month. Paid plans start at $10/month for 150 checks, scaling to $50-$250/month for higher volume and API access.

Witness gives 5 scans without any account. Sign up (free) and you get 20 scans per month. Pro is $15/month or $120/year for unlimited image scans and 100 video scans per month. The Chrome extension is free at every tier.

When to Use Which

Use AI or Not if:

  • You need text detection (Witness does not offer this)
  • You need music detection
  • You want API access today at scale
  • Your concern is primarily "was this generated by AI?"

Use Witness if:

  • You need face-swap detection (video call scams, sextortion, identity fraud)
  • You want to understand why something was flagged (heatmaps, per-signal breakdown)
  • You want to scan images in your browser without downloading them
  • You care about provenance (C2PA Content Credentials)
  • Your concern is "is this person real?" not just "is this AI?"

Limitations Both Tools Share

  1. Compression degrades accuracy. Screenshots, social media compression, and re-encoding strip data that classifiers rely on.
  2. New generators create a moving target. When a new model launches, detectors need time to update.
  3. Human-edited AI content is harder to detect. An AI image manually touched up in an editor is harder to classify.
  4. Neither tool replaces judgment. A detection result is one signal. Context, source credibility, and corroborating evidence still matter.

The Bottom Line

AI or Not covers more content types (text and music in addition to images, video, and audio). Witness goes deeper on the content types it does cover: dedicated face-swap detection, visual explainability through heatmaps, provenance checking, and a Chrome extension that meets you where the content is.

If you are checking whether a piece of text or a song was AI-generated, AI or Not is the right tool. If you are checking whether a video call was a deepfake, whether a dating profile photo is real, or whether a voice message was cloned, Witness gives you more to work with.
